Objectives

The aim of iLearn is:

To promote the principles of free, independent journalism through online training courses.

The project objectives are:

• To develop a sustainable online learning facility for broadcast and print journalists which will complement traditional training projects and significantly extend their outreach.
• To offer journalists in remote regions the opportunity to access diverse training resources and follow a professional development curve.
• To provide journalism training institutions with a means of marketing, promoting and reinforcing their output over the Internet.
• To supplement and enhance face-to-face training sessions.

Ultimately, the BBC World Service Trust aims to create a global community of iLearn users who will be able to exchange ideas and experience through online discussion forums and net meetings.

Not only will this give journalists the opportunity to make media contacts worldwide, it will also reduce the sense of isolation felt by many media practitioners in transitional countries who consider their problems are unique and insurmountable.

The experience of colleagues in comparable environments who have overcome similar challenges can play a vital role in boosting confidence and devising practical solutions.
