Focus film wins festival prize

Choking on exhaust fumes'Critical Chaos', a film about urbanisation made by participants in the focus workshop in Pune, has won a film festival award.

The 12-minute film was selected for screening at the ICE Film Festival held in Pune, where it was awarded a Merit Prize.

Subtitled ‘Everything Changes’, this film documents how the rapid influx of people into the urban areas has put enormous pressure on the city of Pune. Added to the city’s growing prosperity, there’s been an enormous growth in private vehicle ownership.

“During the last 40 years the number of roads has increased five fold. But the number of vehicles has increased 81 fold,” Vidyadhar Deshpande of the State Institute of Urban Development says in the film.

“This is creating problems in Pune. If we continue to the same pace of growth in vehicle use, then the pollution will definitely harm the health and well-being of people living in the city.”

According to director Huned Contractor, who took the film to the festival, "The film got a beautiful response, connecting with the viewers on the need to do something about the urbanisation issue."
