Online learning goes live

Journalists who’ve taken part in the Focus workshops across India now have access to an additional resource – the opportunity to continue their learning online.

Two courses have been especially designed by the World Service Trust training team: one for newspaper journalists, the other for those working in television.

Each consists of a series of modules, or chapters, covering subjects important to journalists who have chosen to report on environmental issues – such as understanding science, reporting on risk, and investigative journalism.

There are dedicated courses for print journalists on writing features and mounting campaigns.

Their television counterparts have access to modules on making television documentaries.

Each of the modules has been written by a journalist-trainer working with the BBC World Service Trust or its partner in training print journalists, the Guardian Foundation.

A number of the authors have also delivered face-to-face training as part of the programme – including Linda Christmas, a former Guardian editor, and Kevin Burden, a former BBC environment correspondent who is the editor of the iLearn online learning system.

“We covered a lot of ground during the workshop,” said Kevin, who trained the first team in Pune, “but I hope the iLearn courses will give everyone the opportunity to consolidate what they learned – and perhaps take things even further.”

Participants in the Focus programme are now being contacted with their login details and an invitation to start the online courses.

Those who successfully complete them will be awarded a BBC certificate.

Students can log in using the box at the top right of the Focus home page, www.i-learn.co.uk/focus
