83 complete a ‘really wonderful’ course

Journalists in India who followed an iLearn course on reporting the environment found it ‘stimulating’, ‘exciting’, ‘motivating’ and ‘rewarding’. 83 specialist reporters across nine states successfully completed the course, which was the final part of the 18-month Focus on the Environment training programme.

The ‘Reporting the Environment’ course consisted of ten modules, eight of them common to all participants, and two medium-specific modules for each group of print and television journalists.

•          Focus on the Environment – an Introduction
•          Reporting a Specialist Subject
•          Reporting the Environment
•          Overview of Investigative Reporting
•          Investigative Research
•          Health in the News
•          Understanding Science
•          Reporting Risks
•          Writing a Newspaper Feature (Print)
•          Newspaper Campaigns (Print)
•          Film and Television Documentaries (TV)
•          Documentary Checklist (TV)

77% of those who started the course completed it. The average score was 81%.

Participants rated the online learning experience very highly, finding special praise for the module on Newspaper Campaigns and the Documentary Checklist, which each provide a rare insight into the workings of a high-level practitioner, and give tips and advice which will very directly help the online students to perform their jobs more effectively.

Comments included:

“As someone with considerable newspaper experience, I found this a wonderful way of filing my learning. The module on feature-writing is delectable.”

“In India I have studied in the supposedly best journalism school, followed by three short-term courses with various organisations, including a leading newspaper. I found this to be the best one. The reason is it is very practical and simple. Most print courses in India I'm exposed to preach theories which are not at all in practice nowadays or are very ideal. This course talks about the business that is possible in journalism.”

“It was one of the finest refresher courses I have undertaken. I feel energised to undertake bigger and better news campaigns!”

“Excellent. I personally think that reporters like me who have undergone training should take this to vernacular reporters.”

“It was a really wonderful course. Apart from enriching my mind it also helped in motivating me to pursue my journalism more vigorously.”

“Quite stimulating. Being the last to catch the bus, it was indeed surprising that I sat up to almost midnight to finish it. Not for the certificate, but for the fun of it.
