World Service Trust logo

The Trust’s experience of managing journalism training projects is unique in the development community. Over the past six years, it has been involved in establishing and running sustainable training centres in Russia, Ukraine, Bosnia and Serbia. The Trust has also run long-term training initiatives in Somalia, Rwanda and Afghanistan. These projects have been aimed at rebuilding media industries shattered by armed conflict and focused on basic skills training as well as consultation on media regulation and best practice. The Trust was recently awarded £6 million by the Department for International Development to establish a broadcasting network across southern Iraq.

Established in 1989, SEI is an independent, international research institute specialising in sustainable development and environment issues. It works at local, national, regional and global policy levels. The SEI research programmes aim to clarify the requirements, strategies and policies for a transition to sustainability. These goals are linked to the principles advocated in Agenda 21 and the Conventions such as Climate Change, Ozone Layer Protection and Biological Diversity. SEI along with its predecessor, the Beijer Institute, has been engaged in major environment and development issues for a quarter of a century. It seeks to be a leader in the creation of a new field of sustainability science aimed at understanding the fundamental character of interaction between nature and society, and to contribute to the capacities of different societies to build transitions to more sustainable futures.

TERI logo small
The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI)

A dynamic and flexible organization with a global vision and a local focus, TERI was established in 1974. While in the initial period the focus was mainly on documentation and information dissemination activities, research activities in the fields of energy, environment, and sustainable development were initiated towards the end of 1982. The genesis of these activities lay in TERI’s firm belief that efficient utilisation of energy, sustainable use of natural resources, large-scale adoption of renewable energy technologies, and reduction of all forms of waste would move the process of development towards the goal of sustainability.

A unique developing-country institution, TERI is deeply committed to every aspect of sustainable development. From providing environment-friendly solutions to rural energy problems to helping shape the development of the Indian oil and gas sector; from tackling global climate change issues across many continents to enhancing forest conservation efforts among local communities; from advancing solutions to growing urban transport and air pollution problems to promoting energy efficiency in the Indian industry, the emphasis has always been on finding innovative solutions to make the world a better place to live in.
