Disposable Death

A film by the participants in the
Delhi Environment Journalists' Workshop

Biohazard - disposable death

In Delhi, rag pickers sift through hospital waste in search of medical items they can sell back to hospitals for re-use.

"I collect four or five kilos of used syringes each day," one of them tells the film-makers. "You remove the needle and they're ready for re-use!"

But the practice, which is illegal, could kill them.

"If there are live bacteria, live viruses, then they're at a very high risk of getting infected," says Dr MR Mehta at the Fortis Hospital.
