WORKSHOPS
First Cycle Successfully Completed

The aim of the course was to provide practical, relevant and interactive training in journalism skills through a series of 8 intensive 5-day workshops, complemented by on-line learning using the WS Trust's iLearn system.  The workshops are part of the 'blended' approach to journalism training in India, including face-to-face courses and iLearn modules, as well as tutorials and training handouts.

A mix of locations, languages and target groups from the newspaper, radio and television industries were chosen in partneship with the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) in New Delhi and the Indian Institute of Journalism and New Media (IIJNM) in Bangalore.

The 8 workshops for English, Hindi, Bengali and Tamil speaking participants were held in New Delhi, Lucknow, Pondicherry, Mysore and Raichak with BBC trainers and co-trainers from IIMC and IIJNM who had completed the Training for Trainers course. Co-trainers were appointed to act as iLearn tutor/mentors.

The content of each workshop followed much the same intensive pattern - covering the basics of news, writing and interviewing skills, ehtical issues and editorial dilemmas plus a major practical exercise at the end of the course.  Students were required to fill in an evaluation form at the end of each workshop .  In nearly all the courses and modules students gave consistently high scores for the editorial training.

As to the future - the courses will focus more on investigative, analytical and explorative reporting, covering specialities such as health, business and the environment.
